Single Pass RO VS Double Pass RO

Think of a pass as a separate industrial RO water system, the difference between a single pass RO system and a double pass RO system is that the time product water passed through the RO membrane. With a double pass RO, the permeate from the first pass becomes the feed water to the second pass (or second RO) which ends up producing a much higher quality permeate.

And a generally used double pass RO pure water system(inlet tap water) is showed as following:

Multi Media Filter System(MMF)

The raw water is always with small impurities, which will fouling the RO system and reduce the output water quality if not removed. Multi media filter is set to remove such kind of visible impurities, such as suspended solids, particulates and colloid; meanwhile it also decreases turbidity and colourity. Multi-Media Filter can remove particulates down to 15-20 microns. Our self-developed multi media filter reduces the raw water SDI to less than 4, which strongly protected the RO membrane from fouling so as to ensure the high quality of the output water. And the filtering sand could be recovered by backwash, so the life time is long.

Activated Carbon Filter System(ACF)

As we know that the activated carbon is with a excellent adsorption capacity as its huge specific surface area. And impurities such as free chlorine could damage the RO membrane by oxidation, easily deposited heavy metal ion will scaling on the RO membrane and organics will fouling the RO membrane. So activated carbon filter is needed to protect the following RO membrane by removing such kind of impurities. Coconut base activated carbon is adopted in our pretreatment system. The design flow rate of the ACF is according to the raw water turbidity.

Antiscalant Dosing System

Antiscalants and scale inhibitors, as their name suggests, are chemicals that can be added to feed water before a RO unit to help reduce the scaling potential of the feed water. Antiscalants and scale inhibitors increase the solubility limits of troublesome inorganic compounds. By increasing the solubility limits, you are able to concentrate the salts further than otherwise would be possible and therefore achieve a higher recovery rate and run at a higher concentration factor. Antiscalants and scale inhibitors work by interfering with scale formation and crystal growth. The choice of antiscalant or scale inhibitor to use and the correct dosage depends on the feed water chemistry and RO system design. And the selection of antiscalant should be according to raw water quality.

RO Membrane Unit

RO unit is the key part of the whole industrial RO water system as it determines the output water quality. It mainly consists of booster pumps, membrane shell, RO membrane, control circuit and so on. The salinity filtering ability of RO host can be above 99% if with reasonable design. So the design reasonability will directly determine the cost-effective and operating convenience of the system. And power-saving, operating pressure, transmission and desalination rate and saltness of output water of RO membrane should be taken into consideration when design. The RO membrane working principal is as following:

PH Regulating System

PH regulating system is composed of chemical tank, dosing pump, relative valves and pipes. As the RO membrane could reduce little CO2, the output water of RO system is acidic. We adopted PH regulating system to control the acidic first stage RO water to weakly basic, so that the second stage RO water will be neutral.

Cleaning In Place System(CIP System)

RO membranes will inevitably require periodic cleaning, anywhere from 1 to 4 times a year depending on the feed water quality. As a general rule, if the normalized pressure drop or the normalized salt passage has increased by 15%, then it is time to clean the RO membranes. If the normalized permeate flow has decreased by 15% then it is also time to clean the RO membranes.

RO membrane cleaning involves low and high pH cleaners to remove contaminants from the membrane. Scaling is addressed with low pH cleaners and organics, colloidal and biofouling are treated with a high pH cleaner. Cleaning RO membranes is not only about using the appropriate chemicals. There are many other factors involved such as flows, water temperature and quality, properly designed and sized cleaning skids and many other factors that an experienced service group must address in order to properly clean RO membranes.

Electronic Control System

The whole system is fully automatic. And also manual operation mode is available. The automatic control is realized by liquid level, pressure, working condition of pump and valves, system operation parameters.

Every single low-voltage power equipment is equipped with over-current protector, starter and overload protector. Each motor is equipped with fault warning light which will light when the relative thermal relay trip occurs, and then the motor will stop.

Liquid Level Control

All the raw water and pure water storage tanks are equipped with liquid level controller which would control the start-stop of relative pump.

Pump Control

Raw water pump, RO high pressure pump, pure water pumps are controlled by the relative liquid level controller, so as to control the whole system. The RO high pressure pump is equipped with high-low pressure protector.

RO system Control

The start, operation, flushing and stop are all automatic controlled. Water conductivity or resistivity is readable on electronic control cabinet to monitor the working condition of the RO system. RO high pressure pump could be start/stop by the button on control cabinet.

A high pressure switch is equipped on the connecting pipe of high pressure pump and RO host to protect the RO membrane from the high pressure shock by suddenly start or boost. And low pressure switch is installed to protect the high pressure pump from idling.

During the stop using period of RO system, the flushing system will automatic flush the RO membrane for 3-5min to prevent depositing and scaling.
